QUANTIFYING COAL DUST IN URBAN SAMPLES:

PRESENTATION, LABORATORY TOUR AND BARBEQUE

Coal dust is an issue of community concern in urban environments, such as along the rail corridor and near coal ports. It is necessary to be able to provide quantitative information for the coal and other particulates which are present as nuisance and respirable dust in a manner that not only stand up to scientific scrutiny but is also accepted by the local community.   Graham’s talk will provide detail of the optical reflected light microscopy imaging method which CSIRO have developed and of the results obtained for urban dust samples which have been collected using High Volume Air Samplers. A web based image viewing method is used for the reporting of the analysis results which enables size and composition information to be viewed for every particle in the sample. 

Following Graham’s talk, the QLD Branch of CASANZ would like to invite you to participate in a tour of the laboratory at QCAT, followed by a barbeque. 

Biographical Note:  Graham O'Brien is a Principal Coal Technologist with the CSIRO Energy Business Unit. He has 35 years coal industry experience working for BMA (previously BHPC) Mackay laboratory, BMA Saraji mine, CCI (now Bureau Veritas) Gladstone Laboratory and CSIRO.  Since joining CSIRO in 1993, he has managed coal handleability projects and Coal Grain Analysis (CGA) studies which link the properties of individual coal grains to breakage, processing and utilization performance. He has also successfully used the CGA system to analyse urban dust samples and obtain size and abundance information for their coal and non-coal components.  To do so optical dust markers which used the reflectance fingerprints of the individual particles were developed to discriminate the coal from non-coal particles and hence provide quantitative detail on the amount of coal and the non-coal particulates in the nuisance (>10 µm) and respirable (<10µm) size fractions. These markers can accurately identify coal, combustion chars, organic, quartz, clay and iron fragments. A skilled petrographer is currently required to confirm or change the characterisation of other particles such as soot, rubber and plastics in the analysis. In 2002, he was a joint recipient of the ACARP Award for Research Excellence for the projects which developed the coal grain analysis system. His previous roles with CSIRO have included leading their Enhanced Coal Cleaning and Logistics and Mining Geoscience research initiatives.

Event News

The Queensland branch meets regularly to discuss and plan technical seminars.  The Queensland branch endeavours to provide free/subsidised seminars where possible.

The Branch Committee welcomes suggestions on events such as breakfast meetings, seminars, conferences, workshops and training sessions from members or anyone interested in air quality management or other environmental issues.

If you have a suggestion or know of visiting potential speakers for any of our functions please contact the Branch Secretary. We also welcome non-members to most of our events. 

 

Training Courses

The Training Activities Executive (TAE) oversees the provision of air quality related training courses throughout Australia and New Zealand. Comprised of a Chair and a representative from each Branch Committee, it plans and co-ordinates the schedule of courses on request or rotationally through interested Branches. The Queensland Branch hosts training courses in Brisbane or, when there is sufficient interest, in regional centres. These include both introductory and advanced courses covering general air quality, ambient and emissions measurement, meteorology and modelling, pollution control and more. A forward schedule and course descriptions are provided on the training pages. The QLD Branch of the Society accounts for approximately 15% of the Society.  Queensland members are served by a committee of 12 which represents professional, scientific and technical areas of environmental protection, regulation and management.

 

The primary focus of Committee meetings is the organisation of technical presentations and training needs.  The QLD branch meetings occur every month on the first Friday.
