Transport SIG

A new Special Interest Group "Transport Emissions and Fuel Consumption Modeling" - or Transport SIG - was formed on 23 April, 2010. Given that environmental impacts of transport are of growing importance, it is envisaged that this will be an active group. The focus will be on quantification and modelling of emissions (air quality) and greenhouse gas impacts from transport, which includes road traffic, shipping, aircraft, rail and also non-road equipment (eg, cargo handling equipment in port areas, ground support equipment at airports). The Transport SIG is intended to be a platform for information sharing, discussion of emerging issues and it will provide a certain level of coordination.

SIG teleconferences will be held every other month (ie, bi-monthly). It is anticipated that members of this group will put forward points of discussion and perhaps presentations on specific subjects, but it is up to the members how much input they would like to give and how much time they want to spent in attending these teleconferences.

Vehicle Emissions Discussion Paper

The CASANZ submission in response to the Vehicle Emissions Ministerial Forum discussion paper, is now available.

The discussion paper welcomed comment on ways to reduce the health and environmental impacts from motor vehicle emissions. CASANZ are pleased to have submitted a detailed response on behalf of all CASANZ members.

CASANZ thank Dr Robin Smit, Chair of the Transport SIG, Jack Chiodo, Chair of the Policy SIG and all our members who contributed to the submission.

Transport SIG Conference Workshop

Monday, 21 September, 2015

The Transport SIG held a Workshop at the 22nd International Clean Air and Environment Conference on the topic of:

'ROAD TUNNELS AND AIR QUALITY'

Some of the key themes and emerging issues are listed below:

  • How best to engage communities concerned about road tunnels and air quality? Worth considering future specific discussions / forums on this topic.
  • Road tunnel emission factors – We need one set of factors for all tunnels that is kept up-to-date. How do we best achieve this?
  • Predicting air quality inside tunnels – Issues and input data requiring further investigation; PM2.5, NOx, primary NO2, temperature, traffic
  • Road tunnel air quality design criteria – How do we best understand air quality around portals? How do we optimise design and operation to achieve in-tunnel air quality criteria?
  • Vehicle fleet dieselisation – What will be the impact of fleet dieselisation on in tunnel air quality?
  • In-tunnel NOx – What does best practice look like?
