VIRTUAL WORKSHOP

.
The Modelling SIG Workshop will be held in association with the 25th International Clean Air and Environment Conference (CASANZ 2021).

A short workshop presentation is planned to create discussion around the use of photochemical models specifically as they are applied for the purpose of regulatory, air quality impact assessment.  Time is of the essence for this type of industrial (non-research) project, often with a focus on predicting annual maxima for hourly average nitrogen dioxide and ozone concentrations, for comparison with air quality standards.

The presentation and discussion is intended to focus on the use of the Generic Reaction Set (GRS) e.g. as incorporated in CSIRO’s ‘TAPM’ model.  In the context of air quality assessment for regulatory purposes, TAPM-GRS offers a relatively simple solution to modelling photochemistry that, in some cases, would be preferable to applying simple approximations such as the Ozone Limiting Method, which is often used.

Also, GRS is able to compete with far more complex photochemical models, in some situations.  Reference will be made to a UK study reported in the peer-reviewed, international literature, that demonstrated substantial computational advantages of using GRS over these more complex models.  The results of these performance tests have obvious implications for regulatory modelling assessments for the industry.

Workshop overview:
.

  • 30 years of Generic Reaction Set, is GRS still useful in the 2020s? – Dr Matthew Pickett, (Jacobs).
    .
  • Using WRF for generating files for AERMOD modelling – Steven Utembe and Jason Choi (EPA VIC)
    .
  • EVs, rooftop solar and urban air pollution – a new look at some old modelling – Peter Rye (Western Air Sciences)
    .
